LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The state of Michigan will no longer allow conversion therapy of LGBTQ youth after Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a pair of bills on Wednesday prohibiting the practice.

Gov. Whitmer called it a “horrific” practice. “Today, we are banning the horrific practice of conversion therapy in Michigan and ensuring this is a state where you can be who you are,” said Governor Whitmer. “As a mom of a member of the community and a proud, lifelong ally, I am grateful that we are taking action to make Michigan a more welcoming, inclusive place.”

Conversion therapy references intervention that attempts to council an LGBTQ person to change his or her sexual orientation.

The legislation creates penalties for licensed mental health professionals if they practice conversion therapy. However, it does not address unlicensed professionals or religious leaders who practice it.

Rep. Nancy De Boer (R-Holland) told Michigan Advance the bills tie the hands of mental health care providers since it allows the government to drive a wedge between the therapist, patient, and family conversations.

“I voted to put families over vague mandates and radical political agendas,” De Boer said. “Parents in consultation with qualified medical professionals are better qualified to make important decisions regarding their child’s development, not politicians in Lansing.”
