Former Republican Alcona County commissioner and member of the Fairview Area Schools Board of Education Gary Wnuk filed the recall petition against Cavitt last month. The reason cited was Cavitt’s “yes” vote to elect state Rep. Joe Tate (D-Detroit) as state House speaker in January.

The petition against Cavitt, who is serving his first term in the Michigan House, will need 11,901 signatures to remove him from office.

“This partisan tactic diverts our attention from the harmful policies coming out of Lansing, such as the recently signed budget, which was crafted in secrecy and harms Michiganders, as well as neglecting fundamental priorities of those in our community like road repairs and focusing on improving education,” Cavitt said in a statement. “My constituents sent me to Lansing to fight for projects like the Cornwall Flooding, a Veterans Cemetery in Presque Isle County, and for workforce housing at Alpena Community College. This is simply a distraction that takes away from the real issues those in my district care about.”
