NORTON SHORES, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – 2022 GOP gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon reflected on her run for the state’s top office, and admitted former President Donald Trump tried to convince her to change her messaging on abortion.

Dixon lost to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer by eleven points in November.

The Norton Shores Republican made the comments during an interview with Trump on an episode of The Tudor Dixon Podcast this week.  While Whitmer made it clear from the beginning she would “fight like hell” for abortion rights, Dixon appeared to ignore the Democratic attack ads after winning the primary. Those ads repeatedly showed Dixon saying “no exceptions” when questioned about abortion and whether it is a viable option when woman are impregnated by rape and incest.

“You came to me and you said, ‘You’ve got to talk differently about abortion,’ and we could not pivot, we could not pivot in time,” Dixon said to Trump during the episode. “You were absolutely right, sir, and I hope that you are able to navigate that issue in ’24 and that we can win those women back.”

Trump responded, “Exceptions are very important. I think you need the exceptions,” he said.

Dixon swiftly won the primary in August 2022 by beating out four other candidates, but appeared quiet for the next eight weeks when asked to clarify those statements. In addition, Michigan News Source pressed Dixon about her campaign strategy during that period and were met with vague answers.

Dixon’s comments also contrasted Proposal 3, a ballot initiative that passed overwhelmingly. That initiative, which has now been codified into law, overturned the state’s 1931 abortion ban and allows the procedure through all nine months of pregnancy for any reason.

Following the election, Dixon attacked the Michigan GOP over its refusal to support her campaign.
