DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – President Joe Biden tried to make good on his promise as a union ally and visited picketing UAW workers in Detroit on Tuesday.

Biden stood alongside UAW President Shawn Fain and workers at the GM Willow Run Redistribution Center in Belleville. Workers entered their 12th day of the “Stand Up Strike” against Ford, GM, and Stellantis.

Biden, who spoke through a megaphone, told the workers, “You deserve the significant raise you need and other benefits.”

Fain then took the megaphone from the president and gave a longer speech to the workers. “Thank you, Mr. President, for coming to stand up with us in our generation-defining moment,” said Fain. “We do the heavy lifting. We do the real work,” Fain said. “Not the CEOs.”

Biden’s visit came four days after Fain made the plea in a Facebook announcement that union supporters, including the president, should come show solidarity with the workers by walking alongside them. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump planned to visit Detroit more than a week ago. Trump is skipping Wednesday night’s GOP debate in lieu of supporting the UAW.

However, union leaders seem less enthusiastic about Trump’s visit than Biden’s show of support. The UAW traditionally backs Democratic candidates in elections.

Trump is expected to address 500 former or current union members at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Drake Enterprises  in Clinton Township.
