DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, then it’s possible former President Donald Trump is basking in that glory. He announced last week that he’d be skipping Wednesday night’s second presidential debate and instead spend that time visiting with auto workers in Detroit.
His visit comes one day after President Joe Biden gave a 90 second speech on the picket line in Michigan on Tuesday only after UAW President Shawn Fain urged him to walk with them in a a Facebook announcement last Friday.

“You guys, the UAW, you saved the automobile industry back in 2008 and before,” Biden said into a megaphone to striking workers on Tuesday. “[You] made a lot of sacrifices, gave up a lot.”
Earlier on Wednesday, GOP presidential hopeful Asa Hutchinson stopped by Detroit for a press conference. He is not participating in the presidential debate either because he did not meet the fundraising or poll threshold.
The “Stand Up Strike” against the Big 3 is nearing the two-week mark. It started with walk outs at three plants, including one in Michigan. Last week, Fain announced the expansion of that strike to 38 parts distribution facilities in 20 states.
Among other things, the UAW is demanding more pay and less hours.
Trump will speak with roughly 500 non-union workers at an auto supplier in Clinton Township on Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. It’s an opportunity for the GOP to court the UAW, which normally puts its support behind Democrats in presidential elections.
