EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – More people are voicing concern over Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees and calling for chair Rema Vassar to step down.

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow and former Michigan Gov. Jim Blanchard, both Democrats, called for Vassar to vacate her spot amid allegations that she has bullied administrators and fellow board members.

Stabenow said the allegations against Vassar this week are “extremely serious” and that the university needs the “right leadership” during this time. “I sincerely believe it’s in the best interest of the University and our state for her to resign from the board immediately,” Stabenow said. Blanchard, who served as Michigan’s governor for two terms, said Vassar is treating MSU “like it’s her own private club.”

“Her day-to-day meddling in the management of the university makes responsible governance more difficult than it needs to be,” Blanchard said in a statement. “The taxpayers and our Spartan nation deserve better.”

Stabenow and Blanchard’s call for Vassar’s resignation came after Trustee Brianna Scott accused Vassar in a seven-page letter of bullying fellow trustees and university administrators and violating codes of conduct.
