EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan State University named a new president at a special meeting on Friday morning after what Board of Trustees chair Rema Vassar called a “through and expansive process.”

The Board appointed Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz as MSU’s next president. Interim President Teresa Woodruff said she did not want the permanent position. He takes office on March 4, 2024.

Guskiewicz has been a chancellor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 2019. He said he would not take the position unless the Board promised to not interfere with his decisions.

The naming of Guskiewicz as MSU’s president comes as the embattled university continues to recover from a revolving door of leadership. Since 2018, MSU has seen five presidents come and go: LouAnna K. Simon, former Gov. John Engler, Satish Udpa, Samuel Stanley, and Teresa Woodruff.

Guskiewicz will have his hands full as he takes over as top Spartan. This year alone, MSU endured a mass shooting and the disgraceful firing of head football coach Mel Tucker. MSU continues to deal with the fallout of the Larry Nassar scandal as well.
