SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The mild winter weather continues to bring bad news for communities and events that rely on colder temperatures, snow, and ice during this time of year.
For the second year in a row, the Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race has been canceled due to lack of snow.

The race was scheduled to take place January 6-7 at the Muskallonge Lake State Park in Newberry.
This week, organizers announced the trails currently have less than an inch of snow and conditions are not save for dogs and their mushers.
Rainy, muddy weather forced Mt. Holly in Oakland County to close in the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Things seemed to be looking better on Wednesday.
In Gogebic County, Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort worked into the new year to get their ski slopes back in shape.

Meanwhile, the Great Lakes aren’t so great when it comes to ice coverage. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports the total ice coverage across the Great Lakes is at just .4% as of Jan. 1.
It’s 30-day ice forecast predicts open water for all five Great Lakes in many areas through the end of January.
