LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Legislature is back in session on Wednesday for the first time since adjourning in November.
Democrats held control of both the House and the Senate in 2023; however, the House will remain deadlocked this year until special elections can be held to fill two seats.

Democratic members Kevin Coleman (D-Westland) and Lori Stone (D-Warren) vacated those seats after winning mayoral races in their home districts in November.
Special elections are slated for Jan. 30 (primary) and April 16 (general).
House Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit) and House Republican leader Matt Hall (R-Richland Township) discussed shared power, but no official agreement has been reached.
