LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Community Service Commission, the state’s lead agency on volunteerism, encourages Michiganders to serve their community on Martin Luther King Jr. Day today.
What is the volunteer footprint across the state today?
To honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., the Michigan Community Service Commission is supporting 22 volunteer projects across the state. It will engage more than 1,700 volunteers in 6,000 service hours to address needs such as food insecurity, homelessness, environmental stewardship and supporting youth.

To support these efforts, the Michigan Community Service Commission has awarded more than $12,000 in grants ranging from $100 to $1,000. AmeriCorps and Youth Service America have provided a portion of the grant funding for MLK Day service.
Ginna Holmes, executive director of the Michigan Community Service Commission says, “Volunteering is a great way to show the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and carry on his legacy.”
She continues, “Whether it’s serving in your community, helping a neighbor or supporting something you are passionate about, we encourage everyone to find way to volunteer.”

Governor Makes Proclamation
Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer also issued a proclamation declaring the day as as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Michigan, honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In her press release, Governor Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II call on Michiganders to reflect on the life of Dr. King and commit themselves to continuing his work to advance social justice, equality, and freedom for all.
“This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I encourage every Michigander to reflect on the life of Dr. King and how we can all work together to build a more just, free, and prosperous Michigan for all,” said Governor Whitmer. “Dr. King fought against injustice, discrimination, and hate. He was a proud American patriot who brought our nation closer to its highest ideals. By following his example, we can build on his legacy and make a real difference in people’s lives together.”

“Dr. King was a visionary leader who used the power of his example to create real change,” said Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II, Michigan’s first Black lieutenant governor. “Every Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Michiganders come together to reflect on Dr. King’s life and legacy and recommit to carrying his work forward. I encourage every Michigander to spend time today giving back and improving our communities. Let us keep standing tall for an equitable, prosperous, and just Michigan where everyone can reach their full potential.”
Who is MLK Jr.?
Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister, activist, and political philosopher. He was one of the most prominent leaders of the civil rights movement until he was assassinated in 1968. MLK Day is a federal holiday that is observed on the third Monday of January every year. This year, the holiday falls on his actual birthday which is January 15th. This year marks the 38th observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
