DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Tied at 95 with just over three minutes to play, Detroit’s confidence they have been playing with all year pushed them through to the 106-103 victory over New York. In the series, they trail the Knicks, 3-2, but head back to Detroit for game six Thursday night.

Detroit scored six consecutive points in two minutes, and Jalen Duren had two dunks in that time, with a Cade Cunningham jumper making it 101-95. With 1:57 to play, Detroit’s defense held off New York for almost 90 seconds as the Knicks finally connected on a basket, cutting the lead to four, 101-97. It was two and a half minutes since the Knicks scored.

Ausar Thompson hit a bucket with 27.1 seconds left, pushing the lead back to six, 103-97. New York answered with a three-pointer two seconds later and was within one, 104-103, with seven seconds to play. Cunningham was fouled with 5.1 seconds left and canned both free throws, putting the score at 106-103. The last-second effort for a shot on a missed New York free throw didn’t happen, as Detroit kept their post-season alive.

Cunningham led Detroit with 24 points, collecting eight rebounds and assists. Thompson added 22 points and Tobias Harris 17 for the starters. Dennis Schroder came off the bench for 14 points, and Malik Beasley added 10.

After the game, Cunningham added about the team, “Confident. We’ll be back!”

Adding to that, Harris said, “Everybody’s got a back’s-against-the-wall type of mentality, but the groupl really loves being around each other and I think that was one of the biggest things. We don’t want this thing to stop. Like, we’ve got to keep on fighting.”

Detroit can tie up the series on Thursday night at home.
