ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan hasn’t had the best news this spring. Two former assistant coaches, former defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale, were issued show-cause penalties from the NCAA.

Minter was given a one-year ban from collegiate athletics and Clinkscale for two years. Both will start their suspensions immediately. Minter’s penalty says he cannot hold any “athletically-related position” at an NCAA school. Clinkscale’s punishment is more severe: If a program hires him, he cannot have any athletic-related roles, and in his first season, he would be suspended for 50 percent of the season.

The NCAA report says that Minter knowingly made impermissible early communication with a high-school prospect “multiple’ times and did not report the violations to the school’s compliance department. Clinkscale admitted to giving impermissible benefits to prospects and their families during their recruitment and not providing complete information during an interview during the investigation. The report says that Clinkscale “failed to fully satisfy his obligation to cooperate with the investigation before he eventually acknowledged the violations and his involvement in them.”

Minter was at Michigan from 2022 to 2023 and Clinkscale from 2021 to 2024. Both are currently on Jim Harbaugh’s staff for the Los Angeles Chargers.

The list of coaches terminated, left, or quit from Michigan due to violations or breaking the law is 14. Harbaugh is currently serving a four-year show-cause penalty for the first violations from the COVID recruiting era. Current head coach Sherrone Moore already has one violation, with more pending from the NCAA. If Moore receives a Level-1 violation from the NCAA, he could be suspended significantly.
