GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – After four days of deliberations, a jury said it cannot reach a unanimous verdict in the case of a former Grand Rapids police officer accused of second degree murder in the death of a motorist three years ago.
The jury deliberated for more than 20 hours before telling Kent County Circuit Court Judge Christina Mims on Thursday morning it was hopelessly deadlocked in the case of Christopher Schurr, so she declared a mistrial.

The ruling came after jurors went to the judge once earlier this week saying they could not reach a verdict.
Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker must now decide whether to try the case again in front of a new jury.
Schurr shot 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya in April 2022. He pulled Lyoya over because his plates and vehicles did not match. Body cam footage shows Lyoya resisting arrest and Schurr said he feared for his life as Lyoya reached for the taser. Afterwards, toxicology reports show Lyoya’s blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit.
