Malori Salamango, a school resource teacher, announced her resignation after just two years at the May 12 school board meeting.

The Grand Rapids Press headline read: “Grand Rapids Teacher Publicly Resigns, Calling Out Burnout, Understaffing”

The article stated “Salamango said her decision to leave isn’t a reflection of her school or love for her students, but what happens when buildings are continually understaffed.”

Since Salamango joined the district, enrollment dropped from 13,802 in her first year to 13,692 this year. However, the number of full-time teaching positions in Grand Rapids has increased from 866.61 positions to 1,000.27, according to the state of Michigan.

The district added about 134 full-time teaching positions at a time it had 110 fewer students in Salamango’s second and final year.
