GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Kent County prosecutor announced on Thursday that he will not retry a former Grand Rapids police officer for murder in the death of a motorist.

Christopher Schurr can move on with his life after Prosecutor Chris Becker explained to the press that he will not retry Schurr or consider a second trial with a lesser charge. Becker explained that the hung jury in Schurr’s trial earlier this month voted 10-2 in favor of not guilty.

Becker said he spoke with the family of 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya less than an hour before the press conference. Schurr pulled over Lyoya in April 2022 because his plates and vehicle did not match. Lyoya, who had a blood alcohol level of three times the legal limit, resisted arrest and reached for Schurr’s taser. Schurr said he feared for his life and shot Lyoya.
