LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — U.S. Rep. John James is pressing Congress for $90 million to jumpstart a runway overhaul at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, as Michigan prepares to host a fleet of next-generation fighter jets.

The funding request, filed with the House, comes as the Macomb County base eyes the arrival of 21 F-15EX aircraft in 2028a move tied to a defense directive issued by President Donald Trump, which James says the project directly supports.

“We are focused on this. We’re not throwing a whole bunch of things up against the wall,” James told The Detroit News. He also called the project “vital to the storage and deployment of as many aircraft needed in times of crisis.”

The planned runway relocation would shift flight operations away from residential zones near the Clinton River, resolving long-standing safety concerns. The full project carries a $124 million price tag, with state and local dollars expected to cover the balance.

Air Force officials confirmed the F-15EX squadron is on track for Selfridge. A site visit is scheduled for June to begin planning for airfield upgrades, hangar space, and support infrastructure.

James has rallied support from county leaders and is seeking bipartisan backing from Michigan’s congressional delegation. The base employs roughly 4,000 workers and generates an estimated $850 million in annual economic activity.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer previously committed $100 million toward Selfridge improvements. The Legislature has already allocated $28 million for early-stage work, with an additional $26 million advancing in Lansing.

James, who is also running for governor in 2026, said the runway is the linchpin to securing the fighter mission.
