ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Former Michigan hockey players Zach Hyman and Mackie Samoskevich are on opposite sides of the puck for the NHL Finals, playing for the Stanley Cup. Hyman is on the Edmonton Oilers, while Samoskevich suits up for the Florida Panthers.

Both players may not see the ice, though, due to injuries. Hyman has a dislocated wrist, and Samoskevich has been a scratch since game 2 of the second round.

Samsokevich played a rookie role for the Panthers, finishing 11th in scoring with 31 points. He was the 24th pick for Florida in the 2021 Draft and has one assist in four playoff games this season. Playing two years for Michigan from 2021 to 2023, he scored 30 goals and had 42 assists in 79 games, earning All-Big Ten second-team selection.

Hyman is a former fifth-round pick in the 2010 NHL Draft and was Michigan’s Athlete of the Year, an All-American First Team selection, and a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. He has played a significant role in helping Edmonton reach the finals, scoring five goals and adding six assists this post-season.

Edmonton won game one on Wednesday night, 4-3, in overtime.
