LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink (D) announced her run for Congress against incumbent Rep. Tom Barrett (R) yesterday.

Barrett represents Michigan’s 7th District, which centers around Lansing. This District is known for being a political battleground, with a near-even split between Republicans and Democrats. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called it “one of the most competitive Congressional districts in the country.”

Brink — who served in the U.S. Foreign Service for around 30 years after deciding to resign in April due to policy disagreements with President Donald Trump — is currently Barrett’s only contender.

In Brink’s campaign video, she focused on her time in Ukraine.

“Today and every day — we stand with Ukraine,” Brink said.

She said she is running for Congress to “stand strong” against aggressors.

“My next mission — to fight for what’s right — here at home,” Brink said. “To stand up for the unaccountable, unelected, billionaires trying to slash and burn our government and undermine our democracy.”

Barrett is in his first term in Congress. After serving in the U.S. military for 22 years, he returned to Michigan to advocate for veterans.
