FLINT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The auditor for Flint Community Schools reported that the school district was not enforcing the prevailing wage requirements for construction contracts.

The auditor for the school district noted the issue in its most recent audit of the district. The accounting firm Stephenson & Company, P.C. noted that federal law required the district to track weekly certified payrolls of companies hired to do work by the district for more than $2,000.

Prevailing wages are minimum pay that is set by the Department of Labor and is often times based on higher union-negotiated rates.

“During the audit, it was noted that certified payrolls were not consistently being reviewed, which allowed for one contractor to not pay the correct rate to their employees,” the accounting firm stated in the report. “We would like to note that once this situation was uncovered, the contractor did in fact correct the prior pays so that all employees were paid the appropriate prevailing wages.”

The auditor stated the district said it would make the corrections and monitor payrolls moving forward.
