LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The U.S. Supreme Court issued a blow to abortion provider Planned Parenthood on Thursday, ruling the state of South Carolina can exclude Planned Parenthood from Medicaid programs for non-abortion services.

The 6-3 decision allows the state to forbid Medicaid reimbursements for non-abortion-related procedures and services. Planned Parenthood boasts gender-affirming care, cancer screenings, and free birth control.

This ruling impacts other Planned Parenthood facilities in other states, including Michigan.

Paige Johnson, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, released a statement following the ruling: “Today’s decision is a grave injustice that strikes at the very bedrock of American freedom and promises to send South Carolina deeper into a health care crisis. Twice, justices of this Court denied to even hear this case because Gov. McMaster’s intent is clear: weaponize anti-abortion sentiment to deprive communities with low incomes of basic health care.”

The National Right to Life applauded SCOTUS.  “We are grateful the Supreme Court has recognized the right of states to direct taxpayer dollars toward life-affirming healthcare providers. No one should be forced to subsidize the abortion industry with their tax dollars,” the statement read.
