LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Public schools across Michigan are grappling with how to deal with President Donald Trump’s crusade to end diversity, equity and inclusion practices in education.

The U.S. Department of Education sent out a “Dear Colleague” letter in February that threatened to withhold federal money from schools that didn’t stop with DEI practices.

In response, Jackson Public Schools changed the title of its DEI director to “Director of School Climate & Curriculum.” However, the Royal Oak school district has maintained the title of their DEI director. That highlights that uncertainty of the future of DEI and some legal experts said the matter will likely be decided in court.

Corey DeAngelis, executive director of the Educational Freedom Institute, said the Trump administration had set up a DEI reporting portal but “I think you would need to prove the employee is still pushing DEI.”

The U.S. Department of Education launched the “End DEI” portal in February. The secure portal allows parents to provide an email address, the name of the student’s school or school district, and details of the concerning practices.
