LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill has a controversial section regarding the legislative oversight of artificial intelligence.

The federal bill blocks states from passing legislation to regulate AI for 10 years or risk losing federal funding.

The Michigan chapter of the American Federation of Teachers union has criticized removing states from oversight.

“States will be prevented from passing laws to protect kids and other users from manipulative chatbots, addictive artificial intelligence and data harvesting for a decade,” AFT-Michigan said in an email this week. “Trump’s bill would give Big Tech a free pass to deploy unregulated AI tools impacting children’s health and workers’ safety.”

However, Howard Lutnick, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, said keeping states out of AI was a “non-negotiable for our national security.”

“By creating a single national standard for AI, the bill ends the chaos of 50 different state laws and makes sure American companies can develop cutting-edge tech for our military, infrastructure, and critical industries – without interference from anti-innovation politicians,” Lutnick said in a post on X. “This is required to stay ahead of our adversaries and keep America at the forefront of AI.”
