The $33 trillion bill, among other things, eliminates the waste, fraud, and abuse associated with Medicaid and reserves the governmental funding for American citizens who qualify. The bill bumps back to the House for more discussion, but some Republican leaders said there’s no reason it can’t land on President Donald Trump’s desk by Friday, July 4.

One of the main talking points for Democrats in recent weeks is that this bill guts Medicaid. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is one of those Democrats. She released a statement on X saying, “Republicans have sacrificed the health and well-being of hardworking American families.”

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson released a statement with GOP leaders, including U.S. Congresswoman Lisa McClain (R-Michigan). He said the bill is an extension of how Americans voted at the ballot box last November, including measures to secure the border, cut waste, and  “return to a government that puts Americans first.”

Previously, Speaker Johnson told CNN there are “more than 1.4 million illegal aliens on Medicaid. Medicaid is not intended for non-U.S. citizens.”
