LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz (R-Jackson) kicked off Independence week with a bill that would establish a reimbursement program to help cover the cost of health and dental insurance for National Guard members who do not qualify for coverage.

House Bill 4712 would ease the financial burden of health and dental insurance premiums when National Guard members are not on active duty, according to a press release. Schmaltz introduced this legislation Tuesday,

“Michigan National Guard members drop everything and run toward danger when we need them most — whether it’s responding to a natural disaster, maintaining public safety, or supporting our communities during a crisis,” Schmaltz said in the release. “The least we can do is help ensure they can afford the care they need when they’re not in uniform.”

Although National Guard members receive health care coverage when they are on active duty, Schmaltz said many are forced to make out-of-pocket payments for their health care during deployments.

“These brave men and women shouldn’t have to choose between their health and their service to our state,” Schmaltz said. “This plan is a simple, meaningful way to support their readiness, wellbeing, and peace of mind.”
