EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan State University will no longer adhere to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) guidelines when it comes to faculty reappointment, tenure, or promotions. The decision comes in the wake of the Trump administration’s policy that funding will be cut if schools continue with DEI methods.

MSU’s move comes several months after its rival, the University of Michigan, made the same determination. In addition, the school’s strategic plan and 2021 DEI plan is no longer available on MSU’s website.

A July 8 memo from Interim Provost Thomas Jeitschko to faculty and deans directed them to discontinue DEI protocols in “statements or questions in hiring, evaluation, reappointment, promotion, tenure or related employment processes.”

It’s been several months of change for MUS. In May, MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz announced that a 9% in general fund cuts would be necessary over the next two years. On June 30, he sent an email informing staff about upcoming personnel cuts.
