STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A member of the notoriously violent MS-13 gang (Mara Salvatrucha) was arrested at a motel in Sterling Heights, Michigan over the weekend, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

According to a press release, agents from the U.S. Border Patrol’s Detroit Station responded to a request for assistance on Sunday, July 6, from law enforcement officers in Sterling Heights. They had detained two men following a disturbance at a local motel.

Records confirmed that both individuals were in the United States illegally and are from El Salvador. During questioning, one of the men admitted to being a member of MS-13, a gang officially designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. The man also admitted he had spent 20 years in a Salvadoran prison for killing a rival gang member.

Local authorities also seized just over five grams of crystal methamphetamine found during the incident. Both men are being processed for removal from the United States.

Detroit Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Javier Geronimo Jr. said, “This is a major win for the U.S. Border Patrol and the safety of our communities. This arrest is a clear example of how agents and our law enforcement partners are protecting our towns by removing violent criminals from our country.”

According to Just the News, ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) also arrested a suspected illegal immigrant in Nebraska on Thursday, July 10, who is reportedly a high-ranking member of the violent MS-13 gang and one of El Salvador’s “Top 100 Most Wanted.” The individual is accused of aggravated homicide of five victims, attempted homicide, kidnapping, and affiliation with a terrorist organization. ICE officials said the suspect was arrested alongside another undocumented gang member. Homeland Security Investigations and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are continuing the investigation.

Why is MS-13 in Michigan and throughout the country?

MS-13 is notorious for its brutality and international criminal network. The fact that fugitives linked to the gang managed to enter United States so easily – and end up in Michigan and elsewhere – underscores the consequences of the Biden Administration’s lax border enforcement for the four years that he was president.

Eith no effective tracking in place, there’s no telling how many MS-13 members have crossed into the country or in Michigan – or where they are now.

While ICE, CBP, and other law enforcement agencies continue to apprehend criminal illegal immigrants and gang members, their efforts are increasingly hampered by inflammatory rhetoric from Democratic leaders and coordinated resistance from communities and activists – regardless of whether the individuals being shielded have criminal backgrounds.

Due to political hostility and violent pushback against enforcing immigration law, law enforcement has been facing protests at their offices, onsite threats to their safety, and legislative efforts by Democratic lawmakers to expose their identities. These actions have made enforcement riskier and more politicized, with sanctuary cities and liberal communities protecting violent criminals and MS-13 gang members.

The recent arrests in Michigan and Nebraska highlight the long-term consequences of the lack of earlier border enforcement. Local communities and law enforcement agencies are now handling the aftershocks under President Trump’s leadership, working to apprehend and remove individuals with violent criminal histories.

Despite growing challenges – including protests, safety concerns, and legislative proposals to limit enforcement tools – agencies like ICE and Border Patrol continue to carry out their duties. While the border crisis began at the southern border, its impact is now being felt across the country, including in places like Sterling Heights.
