LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Following reports that a man wielding a folding knife stabbed 11 customers at a Traverse City Walmart Saturday, Michigan politicians reacted to the news on social media.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer shared her thoughts on X and said she will continue monitoring the situation.

“I’m in touch with law enforcement about the horrible news out of Traverse City,” Whitmer wrote. “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence. I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect.”

Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II also shared his sympathies with the victims and their families.

“My heart goes out to the victims and everyone affected by this senseless act of violence,” Gilchrist said in a statement shared on X. “I’m deeply thankful to the law enforcement officers and first responders who acted quickly.”

Attorney General Dana Nessel praised Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Noelle Moeggenberg and said she maintains “full faith” in her. Nessel added that her department has touched based with Moeggenberg’s office and offered assistance.

“I am grateful for the quick action from the many local law enforcement officers, emergency services personnel, Munson medical team and the good Samaritans in Grand Traverse County whose quick action undoubtedly saved lives following yesterday’s heinous attack,” Nessel said on X.

Minority Leader of the Michigan Senate Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, said this kind of violence has “no place in Michigan or America.”

In other posts, Nesbitt praised Derrick Perry, a man who held the suspect at gunpoint until the police arrived.

“This is why we defend the Second Amendment,” Nesbitt wrote in a post. “We are all incredibly grateful for this gentleman’s quick thinking and bravery in protecting his fellow Michiganders.”
