LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Lansing Democrats don’t want federal law enforcement or other states’ national guard troops deployed to Michigan.

House Bill 4976, introduced by Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia) and Rep. Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit), comes as Democratic-run cities like Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. refused to cooperate with the deportation of illegal aliens or help lower crime. That forced President Donald Trump to send troops to get the job done.

Rep. Pohutsky stuck to Democratic talking points at a press conference on Thursday. “Our country is experiencing a constitutional crisis spurred by the lawless actions of the United States’ chief executive,” she said.

However, Rep. Pohutsky is wrong. There is no “constitutional crisis” since the U.S. Constitution allows the president to federalize the national guard. The Insurrection Act allows the president to use federal armed forces to control “unlawful obstructions, combinations, or assemblages, or rebellion against the authority of the United States.”

Rep. Tyrone also spoke at the press conference, saying “real policing…belongs in the hands of local civilian police, not the national guard or the military.” He continued, “This bill is about protecting Michigan sovereignty, and preserving good policing, not federal invasion over fabricated claims or excuses for armed outsiders to control our neighborhoods.”

Michigan’s Democratic party cannot run from its roots of “defund the police.” In 2020, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is on record saying she supports the “spirit of defunding the police.”

The GOP-controlled House will likely not pass the legislation.
