LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer wants more federal funds for northern Michigan’s ice storm recovery event after receiving $50 million from the Trump administration last month.
The real story behind the need for more funds? The hold-up from Whitmer’s Democratic friends in Michigan’s Senate.

Whitmer sent a letter on Monday morning to President Donald Trump and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). She wrote, “While we are grateful for the resources that you have already committed through your declaration of a Major Disaster [in July] and activation of portions of the PA program, many recovery needs remain.”
Trump’s $50 million allocation to Michigan came last month, with both Trump and Whitmer saying they’d worked together to secure the funding. Whitmer expressed her gratefulness at the time and said she looked forward “to collaborating further on much-needed additional resources.”
The hold up? Whitmer’s own party. While the GOP-led Michigan House approved a $100 million relief bill earlier this year to assist with ice storm recovery, the Democratic-majority Senate is still keeping those funds on ice.
In addition, Whitmer and lawmakers still haven’t secured a state budget. While the Oct. 1 budget deadline looms and the Senate and House spar over priorities, Whitmer will jet off to Japan next month.
