ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The University of Michigan hospitals will no longer provide transgender patients under age 19 with puberty blockers or gender affirming hormones.
“In response to unprecedented legal and regulatory threats to our clinicians and our institution, we have made the difficult decision to stop prescribing puberty blockers and gender affirming hormones for patients under age 19,” the University of Michigan Health’s Michigan Medicine released in a Aug. 25 statement. “We understand how impactful these changes will be to many of you. Your safety and well-being is important to us, and we are committed to supporting you during this challenging time.”

Talking Points Memo, a liberal blog, reported that a subpoena was sent to University of Michigan Health by the Donald Trump administration and that triggered the university’s decision. In addition, Talking Points Memo said it had an exclusive statement from U-M on the legal actions of the Trump presidency.
“The University of Michigan, including Michigan Medicine, is one of multiple institutions across the country that has received a federal subpoena as part of a criminal and civil investigation into gender-affirming care for minors,” the U-M statement to Talking Points Memo stated. “In light of that investigation, and given escalating external threats and risks, we will no longer provide gender affirming hormonal therapies and puberty blocker medications for minors.”
The publication cited an anonymous source that stated, “University of Michigan Health’s leadership interpreted the subpoena as a threat that could portend criminal prosecution. Per the source, individual doctors received a hold order not to destroy documents.”
“For the Trump administration, University of Michigan Health’s decision is a win,” Talking Points Memo declared.
