FLINT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Saying it lacks the authority to remove him at this time, the Flint city council will present a resolution to ask fellow council member Leon El-Alamin to voluntarily step down until his criminal domestic violence case is resolved.

The First Ward councilman has been charged in Genesee County with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, a felony, and domestic violence, a misdemeanor, according to the resolution. The incident happened July 10, 2025.
The resolution stated, “Council lacks the authority to unilaterally remove or suspend an elected member based solely on allegations or pending charges; vacancies occur only upon conviction, resignation, or similar disqualification; nonetheless, Council possesses the authority to express moral and political stances through resolutions.”
Officials appointed El-Alamin in 2024 to replace former council member Eric Mays, who had died.
El-Alamin is the founder and executive director of the M.A.D.E. Institute, a nonprofit organization. M.A.D.E. stands for Money, Attitude, Direction and Education. Its mission is to help at-risk youth. In 2023, El-Amin reported a $68,000 salary with the nonprofit. M.A.D.E. reported $907,393 in revenues that year.
