DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Two days after the Dearborn Heights Police Department posted a photo of a police patch featuring Arabic script, the city’s mayor released a clarifying statement.
Dearborn Heights Mayor Bill Bazzi said, “At this time, this patch addition remains an idea and should NOT have been presented as an official prototype.” The department disabled the comments on Facebook.

In a now deleted post earlier this week, the department boasted a new optional patch for officers to wear with their uniform. The patch read ‘Dearborn Heights Police’ in both English and Arabic. It would have marked the first in the U.S. to feature Arabic script. In addition, that post mentioned the patch would “reflect and honor the diversity of our community.”
Dearborn Heights, and its neighbor Dearborn, have a large Muslim population.
The follow-up story is triggering some backlash just like the original announcement. One commentor under a Fox 2 Detroit update said “In how many other countries, more specifically Arabic countries would even think about putting English or speaking English for that matter on a police uniform or any other government uniform.” Another person wrote, “Can anyone say infiltration?”
President Donald Trump recently appointed Mayor Bazzi as Ambassador to Tunisia.
