Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Mayor Don Gerrie released a letter following Chapman’s resignation:

“Today, we received a letter of resignation from City Manager Brian Chapman. As Deputy City Manager, Robin Troyer will immediately become the Acting City Manager, with all authority and responsibility. Formal action on the resignation will be on the agenda for the September 15, 2025, city commission meeting.

Brian has served the city for just shy of six years, and with all of you, the city has made some important progress. Together, we navigated through the difficult period of COVID, welcomed many great new staff employees and department heads, and successfully finished many upgrades like the downtown placemaking project, Meridian Street reconstruction, the Carbide Dock, saw the re-establishment of the SmartZone program through the creation of Headwaters North, and so many other milestones. We thank Brian for his service and wish him a successful future.

On behalf of the city commission, I would like you to know that we have 100% confidence in Robin and in each of you. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for your commitment to public service- every single role at the city is of critical importance for our citizens, and your service doesn’t go unnoticed. We are stronger as a city because of your efforts. We are excited for the future and continued growth and improvement in our community together.”

The timeline for the candidate search is unknown.
