DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Detroit has long had a reputation for crime that still holds true today.
The U.S. News & World Report listed Detroit as fifth in the entire country on its “Most Dangerous Places in the U.S.” 2025-26 list. That list is determined by each city’s murder and property crime rates per 100,000 people.

Southwest Journal released a similar list in May and Detroit placed fifth in the country with the cities with the highest crime rates.
So it’s little wonder that Vice President JD Vance recently offered to have the National Guard be deployed in Detroit. The Donald Trump administration has already deployed the National Guard in Los Angeles and Washington D.C. and has plans to send them to Memphis to reduce crime.

For example, the city had 8.84 weapon offenses a day in 2024 and it has dropped to 7.72 in 2025. Likewise, aggravated assaults have dropped from 22.08 a day in 2024 to 19.49 a day in 2023. Robberies had dropped from 3.52 a day in Detroit in 2024 to 2.94 in 2025.
The Council on Criminal Justice reported in January that Detroit’s homicide rate had dropped to 2014 levels, when national homicide rates in cities were at historic lows.
In 2016, the city of Detroit implemented the first public-private partnership of its kind to battle the increasing crime. In 2025, there are 88 businesses participating.
Each business purchases signage that it is a part of the Project Green Light and install video equipment and provide adequate lighting to all parts of their property. City of Detroit employees monitor the onsite videos in the city’s Real-Time Crime Center.
The city said it has been effecting in lowering crime. The U.S. Department of Justice has published studies on its website that say the program has had little to no impact.
