DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – School board members for Detroit Public Schools Community District made between $8,000 and $20,000 a year in stipends they are awarded for attending school-sponsored events.

The average for the school board was $15,037 for 2023-24, according to information received in a Freedom of Information Act.

Detroit school board members don’t receive a salary, but instead are awarded a $250 stipend for each official school event they attend.

Examples of eligible events include meetings such as school board, committee meetings, public forums, district-sponsored events and graduation ceremonies.

The board increased the number of allowable meetings in a year they are eligible to receive the stipend for from 60 to 100 earlier this year.
