DETROIT (Michigan News Source) — The $5.7 billion Gordie Howe International Bridge is 98% complete, but officials aren’t saying when cars will actually be allowed to cross.
Heather Grondin of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority told The Detroit News on October 2 that crews remain on track to finish construction this fall. But final testing, wiring, and Customs work could delay the official opening into 2026, despite earlier hopes for an October debut.
Once open, the 1.5-mile span will give Detroit direct freeway access to Ontario’s Highway 401 and is expected to pull a majority of cross-border traffic off the Ambassador Bridge.
At 720 feet tall and stretching over the Detroit River, the Gordie Howe Bridge is set to become one of North America’s longest bridges—though for now, it remains a landmark without an official launch date.
