WASHINGTON, D.C. (Michigan News Source) — Following the shooting and fire at a Grand Blanc church on Sept. 28, Michigan’s U.S. senators introduced a bill in Congress to improve security at houses of worship.

Pray safe.

The Pray Safe Act, sponsored by Michigan Democrat U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin, would require the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to create a federal clearinghouse for faith-based groups, houses of worship, and other non-profits, according to a news release. This clearinghouse would function as a database to store resources and information to inform these institutions about best safety practices.

The clearinghouse would include details on safety and security, federal grant programs, and safety training opportunities, with the goal of more efficiently distributing this information to houses of worship.

“We must do more to help protect houses of worship against rising threats and violence, like the recent attack in Grand Blanc Township,” Peters said in an X post.

“Turn this tragedy into action.”

Slotkin also posted to social media. “We owe it to the Grand Blanc community to turn this tragedy into action.”

The bill comes after an active shooter ran his truck into a Church of Jesus Christ the Latter-Day Saints church in Grand Blanc, setting the building on fire, killing four people, and injuring eight others.

“Everyone — no matter what faith you may belong to, should be able to practice their religion without fear of intimidation or violence,” Slotkin said in the release. “The Pray Safe Act will strengthen security for faith communities, at a time when we need it most. After the devastating church shooting and fire in Grand Blanc Township — on top of our synagogues, mosques and other houses of worship being targeted for years — it’s time for action. I look forward to working with my colleagues to get this bill passed and signed into law.”
