In an interview with Michigan News Source, a candidate for Burton City Council said he realized he chatted with Sanford about a week before the massacre. Kris Johns said he was conducting door-to-door canvassing when he encountered Sanford. Johns said “I truly believe [Sanford] had a negative reaction with someone from the church.”
Sanford killed four congregants and injured nine that day, then set the church ablaze before law enforcement shot and killed him.
