LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A group is promoting a ballot proposal that would require a photo ID to vote, force the Secretary of State to clean up voter rolls so non-citizens don’t slip through the cracks and embed in the state Constitution that only U.S. citizens can vote.

Americans For Citizen Voting is gathering signatures so that it can put its proposal before voters. Americans For Citizen Voting said it has paid and volunteer help collecting signatures and is halfway to its goal of having the proposal on the ballot in 2026.

A proposed amendment to the state Constitution needs 446,198 signatures to get on the ballot, according to Ballotpedia.

“Over 80% of people support the need to use government-issued photo ID to vote,” State Sen. Ruth Johnson, R-Holly, said in a statement to Michigan News Source. “Only citizens are eligible to vote in our election we know of over a dozen cases last year where non-citizens may have cast ballots. We need to plug the holes in our system now to ensure there is integrity in our elections.”

American For Citizens Voting is also working in nine other states to get similar ballot measures up.
