LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — A state task force created by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is pressing Michigan to go further than ever before on gun policy, proposing a broad overhaul of the state’s firearm laws.

The Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Task Force—formed by Whitmer in 2024—released a 50-page report on Nov. 24 calling for sweeping new restrictions, including banning the manufacture, sale, transfer, and possession of certain semiautomatic firearms, along with the devices known as “Glock switches” that convert pistols into fully automatic weapons.

“With lives on the line, incremental change is not enough,” the report said.

In addition, the task force renewed calls for mandatory waiting periods, gun-dealer licensing, inspections, and limits on magazines holding more than 10 rounds.

Republican lawmakers, however, quickly signaled the recommendations are dead on arrival.

“Instead of being tough on crime, we go after law-abiding citizens,” State Rep. Jim DeSana (R-Carleton) said, arguing that punishment for gun-related offenses should be the priority.

Whitmer has long said she’s “open to the dialogue” on banning what she calls “weapons of war,” yet the idea never advanced during Democrats’ two-year trifecta in Lansing.

Without Democratic control of the House, the task force’s sweeping wish list is likely headed where similar proposals have gone before: nowhere.
