WASHINGTON, D.C. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan lawmakers don’t trust Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) to oversee her own gubernatorial election next year, and seven Michigan congressional representatives are on the same page.
The letter, spearheaded by GOP Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain, details the previous requests from both federal and state officials that Benson has ignored. This includes a Michigan House resolution which required Benson to comply the with U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and its request for voter registration data. Benson has consistently argued that she refuses to turn over “sensitive” voter information, but the letter points out that the DOJ has “secure [and] lawful procedures to safeguard sensitive information.” The Congressional representatives offered this reprimand to Benson: “This dispute has nothing to do with privacy and everything to do with federal election law and lawful oversight.”

In addition, the lawmakers called out Benson’s refusal to do what the law commands.
“Your unwillingness to follow federal law reflects a broader pattern of disregard for election integrity.”

Benson has consistently refused to turn over election training materials to the GOP-led Michigan House. She turned some over, but not all. Benson has consistently argued that all the information is online. Rather than fully comply, Benson and the House are now in mediation over her ignoring of the subpoena.
