KALKASKA, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Tragedy unfolded in Kalkaska County over the weekend after two brothers fell through the ice on a lake and died.
The Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office said 22-year-old Johnathan Brake and his 13-year-old brother fell through the ice on Island Lake in Kalkaska on December 6. A third brother, a 14-year-old boy, yelled for help while crawling from the broken ice. Police responded to the call around 11:00 p.m. when Brake’s girlfriend heard the boy crying for help.

Rescue crews transported the 14-year-old to Kalkaska Memorial Health Center where he was treated and released.
Crews pulled Brake from the water 40 minutes later but life-saving efforts could not save him. The search for the 13-year-old continued throughout the night. The Northern Michigan Mutual Aid Dive Team found him the next morning in 7-8 feet of water.
The Kalkaska Township Fire Department thanked local first responders in a post on Facebook. It said, “I want to thank everyone that responded to the call last night at Island Lake. We appreciate you all. No one else can do what you do. Station 7, Station 5, Station 4, Station 9, Whitewater(Williamsburg)Twp, South Torch Fire(Alden), Kalkaska Sheriff’s office, MSP, MSP Trooper3(helicopter) Kalkaska EMS, Grand Traverse County sheriff’s dept. Dive team and our amazing dispatchers at Kalkaska Central Dispatch. Thank you again!”
Officials in nearby Whitewater Township also took the time to warn Michiganders about “unpredictable” conditions, saying “no ice is safe ice.”
