LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The state of Michigan suffered the highest number of bankruptcies in 2025 since the pandemic, according to a website that tracks those filings.

It’s a sign 2025 marked a tough year for many.

Michigan had 16,373 bankruptcies this year, 89 more than in 2024. This year was the most since 2020 when there were 16,618 bankruptcies. In 2020, the state was under a lockdown that crippled many businesses.

The website BKdata.com compiled the bankruptcy data using filings from Chapter 7, Chapter 11 and Chapter 13 cases in the Eastern District and Western District courts.

In 2025, 68% of the bankruptcy cases filed in Michigan were Chapter 7, which is where a debtor’s non-exempt assets are liquidated to pay off creditors.
