“I’m a public servant, an entrepreneur, a dad, a husband, and an engineer who spent a lot of my life making the government actually work for people. I’m not done with that, not by a long shot,” Gilchrist said on X. “Today, I am declaring my candidacy for Secretary of State of Michigan.”

Two polls had Gilchrist far behind current Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in the Democratic primary.

Mitchell Research had Benson at 48% and Gilchrist at 12% and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson at 5%. Rosetta Stone’s polling put Benson at 58%, Gilchrist at 15% and Swanson at 6%.

The Democratic candidates for Secretary of State include Adam Hollier, a former state senator, Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum, and Aghogho Edevbie, the Michigan deputy secretary of state.
