FLINT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Democratic U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin questioned whether Flint residents would get money from the water crisis settlement in remarks she made on the Senate floor on Thursday.

“Unfortunately, Flint residents are yet to see anything from a settlement over the last decade, timeliness for the rest of their payouts are vague and always changing, and estimated amounts of initial payments are unacceptably small,” Slotkin said. “It’s possible that Flint families will not see the dollars that they are owed.”

The official settlement website said there are 6,819 people included in the first payment distribution group. The website stated 4,395 claimants have selected their payment option.

It does not appear that the website states exactly when payments would begin. It states, “Each person who has already received a Notice or Decision approving their claim will next receive an official written Award Notice.”

Slotkin’s office sent an automatic reply to an email seeking comment. The reply stated it had received the email and would respond in a timely manner.

It’s been almost six years since the state of Michigan agreed to pay $626.25 million to settle the Flint Water Crisis.
