DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The city of Detroit’s race reparations task force made dozens of suggestions, but not all are grounded in fact.
One recommendation, for example, has giving the Detroit public school district more money to hire more black teachers.

The recommendation stated: “Provide funding to the Detroit Public Schools Community District to recruit African American teachers in Detroit public schools, to better reflect the district’s 81% African American student population.”
In 2024-25, the Detroit Public Schools Community District had 79.3% of its enrollment classified as black. That was a lower percentage than the 85.7% of the school district’s teachers who were classified as black.
The percentage of the district’s teachers that were black has increased from 64.6% in 2015-16 to 85.7% in 2024-25. That data on the racial mix of teachers and students comes from the state of Michigan and was provided by the school district.
The City of Detroit Reparations Task Force is a 13-member body that was formed to review recommendations for financial reparations for city residents due to their claims of “historical discrimination against the black community in Detroit.”
