STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — Roundabouts are supposed to keep traffic moving. One in Macomb County is doing something else instead.
The roundabout at 18½ Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue ranked as Michigan’s most dangerous in 2024, according to a new study from Michigan Auto Law. State crash data shows 162 crashes and 12 injuries at the intersection last year, a 20% increase from 2023.

The Sterling Heights roundabout didn’t just top the roundabout list. It also ranked as the second-most dangerous intersection statewide.
Sterling Heights, however, isn’t alone. Five of Michigan’s 20 most dangerous intersections last year were roundabouts, with high-crash locations also identified in Commerce Township, Farmington Hills, Ann Arbor, West Bloomfield, Kalamazoo, and Walker.
Michigan Auto Law president Steve Gursten said the findings are part of the firm’s public safety effort, not an argument against roundabouts altogether.
“By highlighting high-risk roundabouts, our lawyers aim to encourage motorists to use extra caution,” Gursten said, urging drivers to brush up on roundabout rules or consider alternate routes.
