LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – After months of community meetings and heated comments, Lansing advisory boards took parks off the table and voted Tuesday to recommend placing a modular housing community – a.k.a. ModPods – in the Ingham County Human Services parking lot at the intersection of Cedar St. and Jolly Road.
The Human Relations and Community Services Advisory Board and the Mayor’s Neighborhood Advisory Board jointly voted to recommend the lot as the preferred site for about 50 housing pods meant to shelter homeless residents. That marks a notable shift from earlier proposals that included parks and other public spaces, which drew criticism from neighbors.

Officials touted the site’s proximity to transportation, services, and other resources as deciding factors. Community members at the meeting applauded the removal of parks from contention, though concerns linger from nearby residents about neighborhood impacts.
Before any final decisions are made, Mayor Andy Schor must weigh in and present his choice to the City Council – which will consider rezoning and other approvals.
