SAGINAW, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan’s 35th State Senate District is one step closer to having representation after a 13-month vacancy.
Jason Tunney (R) and Chedrick Greene (D) won in Tuesday’s special election and will square off in the general election in May. The 35th State Senate District consists of large portions of Midland, Bay, and Saginaw Counties. That district’s seat in Lansing has been vacant since January 2025 after the former occupant, Kristen McDonald Rivet, was elected to Congress. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer waited more than 200 days to call a special election to fill the seat.

Whoever wins in May’s election won’t have a long term. An August 2026 primary election, followed by a November 2026 general election for the same seat, will decide the senator who will assume office in 2027 for a full term.
