DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Detroit residents became eligible on Feb. 9 for a state program that pays mothers $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 a month for six months after birth for their babies.

The state of Michigan approved $270 million in the 2025 state budget to cover the cost of Rx Kids for the next three years. That is projected to cover 100,000 babies, or about 33% of all births in the state, according to Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine.

Detroit is one of 25 communities involved in Rx Kids in this state. Other larger cities include Saginaw, Pontiac, Kalamazoo, Flint and Dearborn.

“With no strings attached, the program trusts families with the resources they need during one of the most critical and financially vulnerable periods of parenthood,” the city of Detroit posted on its website.

Rx Kids is a program run by Michigan State University. It is led by Dr. Mona Hanna, a pediatrician and associate dean of public health at MSU’s College of Human Medicine.
